Danny Lerman’s first gig was with a jazz big band at age 13. After studying under Charles Atkins,who taught Motown icon Jr. Walker,he followed his musical dream to the Berklee College of Music in Boston,then on to graduate from the University of North Texas. After playing in the New York jazz scene for a couple of years,Lerman composed and recorded his first CD,Do You Feel and got his on-the-job “front-man” training by touring the Midwest. His next two CDs,Danny’s Island/Chartmaker Jazz and Meow Baby/Lightyear/EMI earned stunning reviews,opening the door to international airplay and festivals in Finland,Venezuela,South Africa,The Netherlands,Turkey,Hong Kong as well as the USA. Lerman has recorded and/or performed with flutist Hubert Laws,vocalist Howard Hewett,drummer/producer Norman Connors and trumpet player Randy Brecker. He has opened for Herbie Hancock,Michael Brecker,Dave Valentine,Sergio Mendez,The Woody Herman Band and Joe Lavano. Lerman’s compositions have been featured in movie soundtracks,Wedding Bell Blues and Kill Me Later,as well as commercials for JD Powers.
Danny Lerman’s symphonic career started with a concert celebrating the grand re-opening of the Morris Civic Auditorium. Performing with the South Bend Symphony,Lerman played original music from his albums Do You Feel,Danny’s Island/Chartmaker Jazz,and Meow Baby/Lightyear/EMI. From there he headed to Breda,The Netherlands to combine world music and orchestral sounds with members of the Metropole Orchestra. Innovation is nothing new to Danny Lerman. His unique show uses his lyrical,jazzy compositions to showcase his riveting Alto,Tenor and Soprano sax skills. Latin,African,Jazz and contemporary rhythms drive playful string,brass and woodwind counterpoints. Soaring melodic lines and Danny’s daring improvisation heighten the emotion of the lush arrangements. The South Bend tribune’s review of Lerman’s symphony concert at Coveleski Stadium,read ”…the saxophonist’s virtuosity and personality seemed to invigorate both the musicians and the audience. Lerman’s horn pierced the night air with authoritative command and gave the proceedings a shot of adrenaline…” While at the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland,Tony Bennett remarked about Lerman’s show ”Beautiful music.” Maestro and Conductor Tsung Yeh says “…Lerman showed energy and brilliance,a captive audience responded enthusiastically.“ This is a show that will intrigue not only seasoned Orchestra buffs,but the young new fans as well.
